That passage is making a point.

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.“

"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”

He’s saying it would be better to practice religion by yourself then it is to go around boasting about religion to be honored by others. Its like when people say “I donated to charity” just for others to say “Good for you! You’re so nice!”

You guys are along the right path but he’s not saying to not pray out loud. He’s saying watch your motivations. If whatever spirit overtakes you and you just have to ignore the world and start praising Jesus in the middle of the street, that’s ok too. A man could do everything right in gods eyes but if its for attention instead of his love, its a sin.

I’m not even religious but I’ve been to enough Sunday school to know where he’s coming from when he says this. Again, you’re not wrong but you guys only got half of the point.
