So Gary Goldman (screenwriter for Total Recall, Big Trouble in Little China and others) is suing Disney for ripping off his Zootopia pitch after saying they were not interested in making it.
I’m not gonna comment of the veracity of his claims but that’s a spotted hyena right there.
Nick was supposed to be a god damn mother fucking spotted hyena.
Yeah, I think we got the better product, if this silliness is true. Which seems… doubtful.
To say “They’re the same character because of the body type” is fucking ridiculous. If you really want a case of stealing an animal city concept, you’re gonna need more than “Oh there’s a big buff character JUST LIKE MINE”
Also these are foodfight tier designs
‘s not about the body type tho. The suit goes over how the characters have nearly identical traits and character arcs (the squirrel wanted to be a cop and was confronted with the harsh reality of not being fit for the force, the hyena was the smooth talking con man who ended up teaming up with her etc.)
Like I mentioned in OP I’m not saying it’s true and I don’t even care, but the claim definitely isn’t a “oh they look kinda similar so they ripped me off”
That still doesn’t sound like enough evidence. Like I feel like I could just say that after seeing the movie. I don’t understand why if this was true, he didn’t raise a point about it when the movies concept art was being shown before the movie came out. I guess he just wasn’t aware but it’s not like he didn’t have time to sue.
I mean I could draw up a bunch of Moana character designs right now and claim they had the same character arcs. Unless he had this stuff written down in other places I don’t see much of a case. I mean the man is a fucking screenwriter for fucks sake. You’d think he’d have his ideas written down somewhere LONG before Zootopia was released.
