the worst things about the ‘undertale pope’ game theory video now that i have gone over it twice

  • it is 16 minutes long
  • he gave a steam code for undertale to POPE FRANCIS, who likely doesn’t have a computer or know what video games are
  • he was specifically chosen by the pope, and in this chance that people dream of, he used it to talk about fucking VIDEO GAMES
  • the intro is him rambiling about how undyne is pope francis which drags for like a full minute
  • he gave pope francis GOOGLY EYES in the thumbnail
  • theres a 30 second joke of him talking about him and george clooney being an ‘otp’ with nothng to do with the video
  • his over-insistence that his “SANS IS NESS” video actually has valid points and could be considered viable
  • “if i was going to consider myself a part of any culture, i would consider myself part of the internet culture”
  • “gamers don’t get representation offline”
  • he still hasnt let go of that jimmy kimmel “gamer” thing
  • he literally couldnt go 4 minutes in without mentioning fnaf
  • the implication that people being homophobic or racist, which has killed and ruined lives, is on the same level as not liking gamers
  • the subtle implication that gamergate doesnt exist
  • hes using orlando as leverage that him giving undertale to the pope is “more important now than ever”
  • he lists off a whole bunch of lets players to prove gamers are “diverse”
  • “to the outside world i could be grouped together with weeaboos, bronies, and whovians”
  • ”it is up to us, loyal theorists, to educate the world on the good works of gaming”
  • “prejudice exists bc humans are lazy”
  • implying that gamers are peaceful bc they over funded undertale’s kickstater which was only, like, $5,000
  • the word ‘pacifism’ increasing in popularity bc of undertale’s popularity as actual proof
  • ”people claiming im sort of social justice warrior”
  • ”for the first time in almost a decade, people are talking about peaceful resolutions to conflict. this is because of video games”
  • he concludes the video with “to help the world understand people of different backgrounds. that includes us gamers”

Most public speeches can last anywhere to 5 to 30 minutes to prove a point. You can skim through a youtube speech if you really want to hear the thesis and save your precious time.

MatPat mentions that he doubts the pope would play it but the game was more of a symbol of what he feels shows how multidimensional the community is instead of how violent and mysoginistic media presents them. If someone chose one simple looking game to be a symbol of modern games instead of picking out from the library of millions of better looking video games that already exist, you’d think that would spark curiosity.

he was specifically chosen by the pope, and in this chance that people dream of, he used it to talk about fucking VIDEO GAMES

He mentioned he interviewed the Pope before presenting him Undertale and even if he didn’t, The Pope is asking for the perspectives of young people around the globe. Games and their community are important to him so his topic for discussion is just as valid as anything you could think of. Besides its the Pope. You’d think he could go a weekend without having to hear about worldly drama and hearing about something else for a change.

the intro is him rambiling about how undyne is pope francis which drags for like a full minute

He was clearly parodying himself. It was a joke. It was CLEARLY a joke.

he gave pope francis GOOGLY EYES in the thumbnail

To go with his “Sans Visits the Pope” title giving the Pope a surprised expression. Its not done randomly and people have edited the Popes image to be way more offensive.

theres a 30 second joke of him talking about him and george clooney being an ‘otp’ with nothng to do with the video

Point that he was making is that one of his favorite actors was there listening to him in the crowd. You act like people can’t have idols or be excited for having the opportunity to speak to their idols about something they are passionate about.

his over-insistence that his “SANS IS NESS” video actually has valid points and could be considered viable

This one goes to you since most of MatPats videos are pretty outrageous. But I would argue that those videos deserve far more hatred than this one.

“if i was going to consider myself a part of any culture, i would consider myself part of the internet culture”

You say that like online cultures aren’t as real as in person ones.

“gamers don’t get representation offline”

People that play video games ARE having their names dragged through the mud by media outlets and their sides of the stories ARE rarely told.

he still hasnt let go of that jimmy kimmel “gamer” thing

People that play video games ARE having their hobby made fun of by media outlets and their arguments to support their hobby ARE rarely told.

he literally couldnt go 4 minutes in without mentioning fnaf

Like it or hate it, FNAF is one of the most prominent indie game series to hit the market for a while. You cannot deny that. That’s like denying Minecraft’s huge fanbase exists. Which they clearly haven’t since Minecraft is on almost every platform currently. The fact that triple A creators have not heard of it shows that they aren’t really paying attention to the market.

the implication that people being homophobic or racist, which has killed and ruined lives, is on the same level as not liking gamers

Just because other issues have a higher body count does not make any other argument less valid. Point is people hate what they don’t agree with or understand or care to understand. Gamers, Gays, Grandmas, Guitarists, doesn’t matter. The issue is “Us and What I am” vs. “Them and What I’m Not” that causes conflict. He explained this.

the subtle implication that gamergate doesnt exist

I’m seriously starting to suspect that you took my advice from earlier and just skimmed the video. This was never implied. He’s focusing on conflicts outside of the gaming culture going against the culture not civil war and unrest within the culture itself. That’s like saying that because me and my neighbor are arguing about cutting down a tree on his side of the yard that’s reaching over to mind, it means I’m subtly implying that my own personal issues such as my electricity bill just doesn’t exist. That’s not the focus of this video.

hes using orlando as leverage that him giving undertale to the pope is “more important now than ever”

Did you miss how many people were pointing fingers at violent video games presented at E3 when this happened? Undertale punishes the player for following through the game as if it was just a normal rpg. It’s an antithesis to a genre. Someone with no knowledge of the culture would assume all rpgs are the same. MatPat wants to show Undertale as proof that not all games are doing this.

he lists off a whole bunch of lets players to prove gamers are “diverse”

And those gamers aren’t diverse because they are lets players?

“to the outside world i could be grouped together with weeaboos, bronies, and whovians”

He’s absolutely right. The other day I heard people in street interviews compare League of Legends to Dungeons and Dragons. It’s completely different.

”it is up to us, loyal theorists, to educate the world on the good works of gaming”

Pride. MatPat has Pride. Go sue him for it.

“prejudice exists bc humans are lazy”

It’s easier to write off the unknown as something we already know and group it together. We were taught to understand Muslims as mostly terrorist so that bias has basically become fact to some people despite it not being true. It’s lazy to label all black people as ghetto instead of taking the time to get to know them.

implying that gamers are peaceful bc they over funded undertale’s kickstater which was only, like, $5,000

Implying that gamers are violent because they buy every call of duty that comes out. You can’t just group gamers like that. Not all gamers are violent and not all gamers are peaceful. Also check your facts.

10 times your number or not, it shows that people are interested in funding an antithesis of a game like this one. Personally Undertale was a first day buy for me because I had never seen a game call me out for being a asshole after I deleted my save and started over. I wanted to see more save file shenanigans like that. The reason isn’t important. The interests however is everything.

the word ‘pacifism’ increasing in popularity bc of undertale’s popularity as actual proof

…you mean the google search? Yes. Because a google term is typed in more in a period doesn’t mean it was never relevant before that period. Everyone knows what Pacifism is and how to practice it but with more people googling “Pacifism Route” of course the term is more popular now than say the pacifists movements during the civil rights BEFORE GOOGLE EVEN EXISTED.

”people claiming im sort of social justice warrior”

I..is that word a trigger for you or something? He mentions he doesn’t want to be called that.

”for the first time in almost a decade, people are talking about peaceful resolutions to conflict. this is because of video games”

THAT IS NOT WHAT HE SAID. He made absolutely no mention of Undertale creating peace. If this was true the entire reason he’d show Undertale to the Pope was to teach him about peace. TEACHING THE POPE ABOUT PEACE. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW IDIOTIC THAT WOULD BE IF THAT WAS TRUE.

he concludes the video with “to help the world understand people of different backgrounds. that includes us gamers”

I’m trying really hard not to insult you right now. To understand all walks of life HAS NEVER BEEN A BAD THING. I’m actually more upset that you made me type out this entire post because halfway through I was suspecting that you didn’t watch the video in its entirety at all and people are just blindly liking your post and taking your word for it.

Guys I am not a whiteknight of MatPat. His videos are garbage and don’t deserve as much attention as they are getting. But this video is just him explaining his thinking for presenting the Pope with a video game and he’s being, not critiqued, insulted for his decision. You have every right to disagree with his decision but don’t sit here and pretend that his argument is any less valid because of some buzzwords that trigger you. You don’t like being called GAMERS? You don’t like when people say SJW? That’s your fault. It doesn’t damage the validity of his claims though.
