The new Ben 10 reboot development art is very telling
THE AT STYLED ONE WITH ANIME HAIR.
I feel like somewhere, some Cartoon Network concept artist had to be physically restrained after they learned these concept roughs were posted online. “I DIDN’T MEAN IT! IT WAS JUST AN EXPERIMENT!” they screamed, teeth still stained with the blood of social media interns.
holy fuck, that red-lined one. even I can fucking sketch with more clraity than that.
I hate all of these
these images are gutting me alive
I love these images. They have so much life and personality. I’m not sure why everyone in the thread feels the need to be so rude and condescending to the wonderful artwork of Andy Ristaino, the lead character designer for Adventure Time. :/
Honestly yeah, some of these comments are pretty rude. The topmost one actually reminds me of Stephen Silver’s work- you know, the guy that did Kim Possible.
I would rather have a bunch of Tumblr users be disgusted about how my character redesigns look than have people agree with what I put out just because I’m Andy Ristaino and then later learn that the redesigns are hated AFTER the show has been animated. People have the right to like the direction as well as hate it. They’re not being rude for the sake of being rude, people are disgusted with the wrong kind of change. That’s critique and it could help to make or break the project.
I would prefer if people were more vocal with why they hated it as it would be more obvious that people have reasons for being upset and it didn’t just appear to be baseless bashing. I’ll say what I feel about the designs so it doesn’t seem like I’m hating on the guy.
You can’t take a character people already know, redesign him to look even more simplified than several redesigns he’s already had and expect people to not be upset. I don’t care who Andy Ristaino is. These character images are not only oversimplified, poor color choice and non dynamic in pose but they are all of those things in the wrong way. Teen Titans Go may not be the best reboot in the world, but their character redesigns are effective and memorable. Hell you don’t get any simpler than Adventure Time and the dude has STILL managed to create for one of the most memorable and recognizable art styles in the last six years. Simplification can be good but it can also be bad. In my opinion these three are the best contenders.
The first ones has the defining color palette, the third has a great pose and the third looks like a re imagining of the original character one step in the right direction.
Honestly I’m pretty sure cartoonist in the industry deal with rejection all of the time. A bunch of tumblr users who are presumably fans of the original series aren’t going to have him lose any sleep. All these initial reactions are going to do is affect how he’s going to decide to move on.
Don’t be rude to people, they worked hard. Sure. But don’t take all instances of people being rude as a bad thing.
