He’s saying it would be better to practice religion by yourself then it is to go around boasting about religion to be honored by others. Its like when people say “I donated to charity” just for others to say “Good for you! You’re so nice!”
You guys are along the right path but he’s not saying to not pray out loud. He’s saying watch your motivations. If whatever spirit overtakes you and you just have to ignore the world and start praising Jesus in the middle of the street, that’s ok too. A man could do everything right in gods eyes but if its for attention instead of his love, its a sin.

All the animals in Bojack Horseman became bipedal fairly recently due to some kind of science dodad. Like maybe 50 years ago. Give or take 25 years for them to comprehend the english language. This is why animal people and human shows were so popular in Bojacks prime and why a lot of the domesticated animal characters have pet names like Mr. Peanut Butter or Princess Carolyn.
