Context: A chaotic evil rogue and a chaotic good warlock (me) are looting an area we just cleared.
DM: Roll investigation on the statue.
Me: Nat 20!
DM: Oh-okay. Uhh, what weapon do you use?
Me: Well I had a quarterstaff until you stole it! *Glares at Rogue*
Rogue: *Smiles innocently*
DM: Well, ok then, you get a quarterstaff +2.
Rogue: I’m going to steal that too.
Me: No you fu-
Rogue: Nat 20!
Me: NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
So I made a new game mechanic to add to the story telling and my players are stressing™.
DM: This will have math to add to your characters for story telling.
Players: *breaths in* M A T H
To this day I still don’t understand why Math is such a turnoff to D&D
Don’t get me wrong I hate math. But adding math to know how good you do a thing? That’s different. They succeeded a save and take half damage? Tell me how much damage they still take. You have no idea how happy I am to hear “This mother fucker passed your spell save but still dies from half damage” You have no idea how much saying “Okay 20 + 5 an- wait. 20 is a critical!”
